THE FUTURE

OF THE NETWORK

Hello, all! In this post we detail our upcoming first "Full" RPG Server, the subsequent RPG Servers which will follow, offer a recap of the network's server history thus far, and cover our new finalized core server roster moving forward. Let's go!

"FULL" RPG SERVERS

We wanted to thank everyone who voted in our Discord on which servers they were interested in seeing for 2020 and beyond, as we utilized that data to inform and confirm our decisions. We will certainly repeat with future polls for community-input.

Our INFO and SERVERS sections have been updated.

 

But before we dive into any of that, let's first explain the difference between our planned MMORPG Servers and what we're referring to as our upcoming RPG Servers.

To put it simply, an MMORPG Server is the "2.0" Development State of each upcoming RPG Server, and will offer a permanent, non-wiping map, skill-based character progression that never resets, and dozens of critical features which make for a compelling long-term experience. While we initially planned to open our first RPG Server in an "MMORPG" state, we instead decided to opt for the wiser move to start smaller and organically evolve from RPG to MMORPG over time.

 

The primary reason being is that the MMORPG state of a server is all about permanence, and therefore there is very little room for error, requiring a substantial amount of testing to be done and data gathered before a server can effectively undergo its transformation into this state; not to mention, some very heavy duty and polished plugins developed, and, of course, an already active and engaged playerbase established to justify the jump.

The ways we define an RPG Server State:

- Highly-detailed custom map (3.7-4.2K) meant for up to 300 players concurrently.

- Already offers long-term XP-based progression that will persist through wipes, for Talents, Attributes, Traits and the like. This will act as a companion to the MMORPG skill-based system.

- Serves as the "foundation" for the future MMORPG version, but is already an entirely playable and massively feature-rich custom server experience in its own right.

The ways we define an MMORPG Server State:

- Boasts a permanent, entirely polished & finalized, very large (5-6K) custom map meant to sustain up to 400-500 players concurrently. 

- Will never map or blueprint wipe. As far as we know, this is a first in the history of Rust, especially on this scale, and as a result we're entering into some uncharted territory and will have a lot of testing to do with very little precedent to rely on. 

- Will feature long-term, open-ended, skill-based character progression that will never reset. Players will be able to continue to develop their characters for months or even years, and will always be able to come back to them should they take an extended break.

- Tons of polished content, features, and fine-tuned interconnecting systems that provide a compelling experience for long-term gameplay, as is the purpose of an MMORPG.

So with all that said, we'll be starting with our first RPG Server titled The Island RPG, which we detail below. Beyond that you will find our next two RPG Servers being Rust-Z RPG and The Purge RPG.

 

One key point to note with our RPG Servers is that we will not simply abandon one and move on to the next. All servers will continue to receive updates, cinematic videos, and regular development attention. Additionally, we are NOT trying to have them compete with each other for population, so a new server will only be released when the one's before it are doing OK population-wise already.

[RustRPG] The Island RPG

Overview

Experience a parallel version of Vanilla Rust, with much more depth. "The Island" takes you to a familiar but whole new land, featuring tier-based Monument progression, making the world more challenging as you progress, as each Monument is home to a unique NPC Faction with their own difficulty, loot, and agenda. Alignment also features heavily, as players will choose between law and order, or joining bands of outlaws who seek to make their own rules. Which NPC Faction will you side with? What Alignment will you choose? Who will you be?

Formerly known as Vanilla RPG, we updated the title to The Island RPG because Vanilla Rust itself is of course set on an Island, and this server is meant to act as a parallel version of Vanilla Rust's setting and gameplay - familiar but still entirely original, and with much greater depth. For those who were able to briefly test our Vanilla - RPG Lite Server, you will be familiar with some of this server's features, though we'll be adding quite a bit more for this launch.

We're looking at a few potential Open Beta launch windows:

October 15th - If all goes relatively smoothly, we'll be aiming to launch our Open Beta at this date. We have every intention of releasing the server and pushing the network into its next gear as soon as possible, but we must ensure the experience will be up to par.

November 19th - This window will serve as our safety choice, giving us an additional month to make sure everything is as we want it to be, and allowing for potential issues that may arise.

December 17th - Only in consideration as an emergency window if for some reason we were to fall significantly behind schedule. Our intention is definitely one of the first two windows.

We will of course keep you posted as to our development progress and which date to expect.

[RustRPG] Rust-Z RPG

Overview
Enter a post-apocalyptic, irradiated region where your primary goal is to stay alive. Facing daunting survival with character illnesses and whole new status effects, scarce resources and ammunition, your skills will be pushed to the limit. Face "Infected" zombie foes, as well as many unique NPC Factions each with their own goals. Build settlements, and let your actions be guided by Karma. Rumor has it there's an Endgame "Utopia" that awaits survivors who aspire to reach the promised land. Will you be one of them?

This server choice was interestingly voted up equally as highly as The Island RPG in our recent Discord Upcoming Server Poll, which truthfully we were not expecting would be the case. But nonetheless we were happily surprised because we're personally fond of this concept and were glad to see our players keen on the idea, too. As such, we've prioritized it as the next one on the list after The Island RPG reaches a stable population and a few other key milestones are met.

[RustRPG] The Purge RPG

Overview

Join the brutal world of The Purge, where everyone starts dirt poor and works their way up the economic food chain by their own blood, sweat, and tears... literally. New players can begin in either the slums of The City, which has pretensions of civility, or in the wilderness of No Man's Land where anything goes, but regardless of where you start, you must earn Purge Tokens to increase your economic status. Create your own political party, run for office, change the world for the better, or burn it all to the ground by creating a gang and Purging with the best of them. The choice is yours.

This server some of you may have already sampled in its Vanilla+ state, as it has been live since July 16th (and is being retired on August 6th). As mentioned on the Discord, we liked seeing the interactions and overall player response to the server concept, but were ultimately dissatisfied leaving it as just Vanilla+, as we felt there was an original and untapped server concept there that could be expanded upon well beyond Vanilla+. 

The Purge RPG will directly follow Rust-Z RPG, again once populations have stabilized and certain milestones are met. While we cannot provide a specific ETA, we can state it will depend on the success and playerbase retention of the two RPG Servers which come before it. More details to follow over time, and in the mean time please feel free to offer feedback on any features you'd like to see or suggestions regarding features already listed.

CURRENT CORE ROSTER ANALYSIS

On July 16th we launched 6 servers, being the 2X Vanilla+, 2X Vanilla+ Primitive, and The Purge Servers, in US and EU regions. We've carefully monitored player engagement on each server, as well as feedback trends. This is why we've decided on a number of changes which we consider to be final, and will not be adding to or subtracting from our core server roster again for the foreseeable future.

EU SERVERS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED
As of August 6th we will be temporarily suspending all EU Server offerings. While our original reasoning for launching in the EU was in response to data we've been accumulating since the network began which indicated a significant EU interest in our servers despite them only previously being located in the US, the ultimate player turnout did not match that data, and our EU servers quite significantly under-performed compared to even our lowest-performing US servers.

While we're certainly not going to use this univariate sample to rule out EU servers in the future, and since we've now established a good relationship with our EU Server Hosting Provider, we will be ready to relaunch the EU servers at a time we feel it is justified and our base population high enough to warrant it.

In the mean while, we will be consolidating all current and future servers into US offerings-only and focusing our attention there, and we invite all international players to play on our US-based servers, which are located in New York City (East Coast USA), and provide a good ping for most players; though again, we will be watching the data, player requests, and many other factors in determining when will be the best time to offer servers outside of the US again (not just only for EU). 

CURRENT CORE SERVER ROSTER

2X Vanilla+ Primitive

This server had by far the lowest player interest and engagement, and while there are a number of reasons we attribute to this, the most significant factors we believe to be that the "Primitive Server" niche already has a number of server options competing for a fairly small playerbase as is, in addition to our server diverging from what seems to be the norm of melee/archery only, as we threw in light amounts of endgame equipment with an incredibly high rarity, uncraftable endgame ammo, and the like for the purpose of creating a meaningful loot progression and more depth to the combat than solely bows and arrows.

While we personally still believe this server could be interesting for players to explore, with such low numbers we cannot justify its server slot, and will be replacing it with the Ages Progression Server for the foreseeable future, which also has "Primitive" elements to it, as the starting age is Primitive, though this server seems to be of more interest to players based on our recent server poll and is also not particularly competing with others of its type. We do plan to bring back the 2X Vanilla+ Primitive at a later date when we have a significantly higher base population. 

The Purge

We've seen notable player interest and curiosity about this server type, as well as positive feedback from those who sampled it. As mentioned above, we felt this concept would be much better served as a deeper standalone RPG Server, which is now in development, so we won't say much more about this. The 2X Noob Friendly Server will be taking its slot in the mean time.

2X Vanilla+

This server will remain our primary non-"full" RPG offering, and serve as an accessible version of Vanilla Rust, though enhanced with a number of our trademark network additions, pulling double duty also as an introduction to our more in-depth RPG Servers over time.

[RustRPG] 2X Noob Friendly

Our newest offering going live in just a few days (This Thursday, August 6th), taking the slot of The Purge Server, is our 2X Noob Friendly Server. This server will act as a companion to our 2X Vanilla+, though with the additions of a number of features geared specifically for newer players to Rust, or even just for those who prefer a softer server experience with more loot all around and a plethora of general conveniences.

- Starting from The Primitive Age, each Age lasts twice as long as the last one
- As each new Age begins, all Blueprints for that Age are automatically unlocked

- Each Age has entirely unique loot tables, NPC drops, and Events!

[RustRPG] Ages Progression

Replacing our 2X Vanilla+ Primitive Server (though with some overlap), and going live on Thursday, August 20th, is our Ages Progression Server. This server was fairly highly voted (tied with Medieval Fantasy RPG with 15 votes) in our recent Upcoming Servers Poll, and we hope will be a positive inclusion, as it covers all aspects of Rust in a novel and engaging way, and does away with the need for grinding Blueprints all together, making it a nice casual choice as well. This server addition rounds out our Core Roster by providing an original choice still based on Vanilla Rust and carrying our unique network additions to boot.

As mentioned above, this server will be remaining as is, though we've simply updated its icon. It serves a primary purpose of acting as an accessible bridge between Vanilla Rust and our upcoming much deeper RPG Server offerings. 

IN CLOSING

All in all, it's been a winding road as we've aimed to provide a roster of servers meant to tide over and expand the community while we continue our work for our main upcoming RPG Servers.

One general misconception (and/or perplexion) we have noticed, however, seems to be that we offered more servers than were ever necessary, and not the servers players were looking for.

 

We hear you on that criticism, but what needs to be understood is that after we transitioned our Vanilla - RPG Lite Server back into closed beta (which became the basis for The Island RPG Server), we intentionally launched these servers meant only to act as varied accessible introductions to the network and the real RPG servers we will eventually be offering - once again, primarily for the interim*, since we knew those main servers would not be ready overnight (far from it), and our players might enjoy having access to something up that alley in the mean while.

They were never intended or expected to be worldbeaters with massive populations, especially coming out of nowhere from an entirely new network not conforming to the standard. With that said, we hope you will enjoy the upcoming completed and final core server roster while we continue to get all the work done that's needed for our primary offerings.

*This does not mean we will be retiring them after the RPG Servers are live; we plan to keep them around indefinitely so long as there is player interest and we feel they serve a purpose.
